The Volunteer Services Internship is an un-paid, for credit only, intern position at the Detroit Zoological Society for Spring/Summer 2012 (approximately May to August). This is a part-time position at 20 hours per week.
Volunteer Services provides support to the staff of the Zoo with a dedicated, trained volunteer corps made up of people who bring unique skills, a love of nature and a concern for the environment to ten different programs. About 1,000 volunteers engage the visitors and the community in learning about wildlife and conservation through meaningful educational activities, dialog and special events. This internship will provide hands-on experience and involve all facets of the department.

| Duties: | •Assist in planning and executing volunteer orientations, trainings, meetings, potlucks and the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party
•Coordinate scheduling of volunteers, record hours in database and submit reports
•Conduct research on topics related to volunteer recruiting, retention and recognition as needed
•Execute general office duties as they relate to the daily operations of the project and department, including but not limited to: data entry, copying, filing, faxing, responding to requests for information, supervising special mailings
•Work with Volunteer Services Manager and Assistant Manager as needed

| Qualifications: | •Must be eligible for college credit
•Junior or senior level college student enrolled in the appropriate majors: meeting and event planning, marketing, business management/administration, non-profit management, public relations, human relations or similar
•Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint;
Internet proficiency. Familiarity with Raisers’ Edge is helpful.

•Creative, friendly, enthusiastic
•Ability to meet deadlines and work in a timely manner
•Ability to deal with various age groups in a professional manner
•Some weekends, evenings and irregular hours required
Credit:
Students must provide information from their school on internship requirements and provide the certification documentation necessary to receive credit.
