| Description: | The Curator of Education under general supervision, plans, implements and coordinates formal and informal education programs via the Strategic Education Plan; oversees the curriculum content and alignment with local, state and national standards.

| Duties: | •Establishes, maintains and represents the Society in contacts with other zoological, educational and professional organizations.
•Conducts workshops and seminars on zoological, humane education and environmental subjects to educational groups of all ages.
•Assists in training, and instructing volunteers in educational presentations.
•Coordinates the educational activities and evaluation of secondary Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) programs. Inclusive of teen volunteers and interns.
•Develops programs to educate and inform visitors, the general public and community organizations regarding wildlife conservation, humane education and environmental stewardship.
•Coordinates the educational activities of the Society to include tours, films, theater, lectures, arts and literature and a variety of outreach activities.
•Assists in developing short and long range plans for zoo education programs; assists the Director of Education in implementing the Education Strategic Plan.
•Coordinates special field trips and camps for teens.
•May hire and supervise directly/indirectly instructional specialists, instructor aides, part-time staff and consultants.
•Participates in special programs to increase community awareness and support wildlife conservation, humane education and environmental stewardship.
•Assists in the development of a strong secondary education outreach program for area schools.
•Collaborates on the development and implementation of a Distance Learning program.
•Prepares and presents zoo promotional programs to encourage civic, professional and other groups to participate or sponsor various Zoo programs and events.
•Conducts research, analyzes data, evaluates and prepares narrative and statistical reports on various topics such as demographics of program participants and other reports as requested.
•Assists in designing and producing zoo brochures, informational and publicity releases, fliers for special events and educational programs and ensures distribution of produced materials.
•Assists in the development, production and installation of educational, informational and directional signage, maps and displays.
•Assists with digital, audio-visual, and visitor interactive support services.
•Develops and coordinates local and out of state learning projects and leads educational field trips.
•Assists in the design and creation of visitor interactive exhibits and displays.
•Gathers material, writes and edits guidebooks, maps and brochures, and disseminates information relating to the Society and its educational endeavors.
•Drafts information on interpretive and educational events and activities for marketing purposes.
•May draft grant proposals to obtain funds for zoological educational and informational programs.
•Remain current on curriculum specifically biology, zoology, environmental and AZA guidelines.
•Such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

| Qualifications: | Minimum
•Graduation from a university of recognized standing with specialization in general science education, zoology, biology, environmental science, mathematics or technology.
•A current teaching certificate and three to five years of experience in planning, developing and implementing educational and informational dissemination programs is desirable.
•Must have strong ability and willingness to develop and maintain effective working relationships and the ability to interact with tact and diplomacy with the public, departmental personnel, media representatives and others.
•Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques in delivering information.
•Knowledge of audio-visual equipment and graphic presentation techniques.
•Knowledge of Michigan’s Core Curriculum and the Grade Level and High School Content Expectations.
•Knowledge of and skill in the operation and application of computerized interactive teaching and display devices and the specialized software required for performance of the work.
•Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
•Ability to acquire additional skills and knowledge through study and training.
Preferred
•May require a valid State of Michigan Chauffeur’s License.
•Preferably advanced academic training in general education, graphic arts, communications or science (zoology, biology, environmental science etc).
•Three-five years of administrative or supervisory experience with youth programs.
